Who Was Robin Hood?
Although it’s subject to a lot of conjecture, Robin Hood is a literary figure who first appeared in ballads sung throughout the 14th and 15th centuries. He was described as a master archer and swordsman and dressed in Lincoln Green clothing. His most famous trait, however, was stealing from the rich to give to the poor, alongside his group of Merry Men and his lover, the noble Maid Marian.
Robin Hood was thought to have resided in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire – which is why you’ll find many references and statues dedicated to him during your trip to Nottingham. Robin Hood’s classical stories have been told across multiple films, from the favoured animated Disney version to the cult-classic Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
There are suspicions that Robin Hood may have been a very old outlaw from before the 13th century, which lead to the name Robin Hood being used as an alias used by thieves in the area. However, researchers are reluctant to call this a certainty.
What we can confirm is that Robin Hood is one of the best-known figures from English folklore and is well loved by all who investigate his interesting story.
